To start off I would like to say thank you to everyone here for the wonderful welcome comments and all the good advice. This is such a good community and we are so grateful for the information you have provided. I hope we can make a good contribution and help others as well!
We picked up Broc late last night from the hospital and I was amazed at how well he was walking as the nurse brought him to us. When I took over it was definitely more difficult than it looked. We brought a towel to help support him and we made the short walk to the car with no problems. We got home and when Broc got out of the car he did not want to walk at all, and it took a lot of coaxing and support to get him to our elevator and into the apartment. He was still very drowsy, so we laid him on his side in our bed and he was out for the night. This morning he woke me up with his paw and some whining, and I could definitely tell he was uncomfortable. It turns out he just needed to switch what side he was laying on. He never really got comfortable in the bed after that so I moved him to his bed on the living room floor and he seemed much happier there because he could prop himself up.
My main concern today was that he was refusing to eat or drink anything, and I know he had not had anything since the night before the surgery. I would try to give him some of his favorites: deli turkey slices and bacon, and he just had no interest in them at all. I ended up buying an oral syringe (as seen in the picture) and filling it with water and got him to drink that way. He drank about 4 of those full of water (it only holds 2 tbsp) and that kind of paved the way to him regaining his appetite. I’m not sure if it was because he was dehydrated, but after that he started eating with not problem. He really liked sardines from a can, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and started eating his deli turkey after that. At first he would only lick the water from the sardines, but I mixed it together with the cottage cheese and he ate it up. To me it kind of sounds like a rough meal just after surgery, but these were some of the recommended foods I had come across and I just wanted to get something into his stomach. Since then he has really perked up, and after he growled as he heard footsteps walking outside our door, I know he is on his way back to being himself.

come chat with us! there are some of us in there now! welcome home Broc!
You May find that Broc will feel much better after the compression bandage comes off. Shooter hated it and wouldn’t walk or go to the bathroom, but did a complete turnaround when it came off.
Yey! Excellent report! I forgot about how magical sardines can be. I’m glad you tried it and it worked. As disturbing as not eating or drinking can be, a day without is OK. That day may happen (again). Roll with it. Welcome home, Broc!

Brad and Michelle,
No worries! I didn’t eat after my amp and I’m a Lab that loves to eat! The Tramadol made me feel yucky, so my mommy had to hand feed me. I didn’t even want to eat super yummy foods like steak, salmon, eggs, or hamburger unless they fed it to me and I only ate a few bites.
Broc will AMAZE you as a Tripawd! My mommy and daddy (and all my vets) never thought that I would make it to my 3rd birthday, but I proved them wrong! Never give up hope! Sending lots of pawsitive thoughts and prayers to Broc for a super speedy recovery!!!!
Luv,
Charley xoxo….and his mommy Ellen 🙂
Right on, Broc of Brooklyn! Thanks for the update, and so glad you’re home.

Isn’t that jist the best feelinghavingyour by home?! YAAAAAY!
For whatever reason…..well, actually I guess the ‘reason” was pain, drugs and major surgery……. Happy Hannah went days without any interest in water! I tried the broth, etc. Finaly started mixing a scoop ice cream (she prefers vanilla) in her water and she wluld drink that!
But yeah, it’s definitely “ormal” to not want to eat or drink. And yeah, the restlessness, whingin…a combo of pain and meds. The irony is, too mich meds looks just like too much pain……too much pain looks just like too mich meds! I opt for keeping them as pain free as possivle…..which is a hard balancing act sometimes at first.
You’ll start to see some sparkle come back in a few days…sometimes ever so slowly, but it will come back bigger and brighter than before! PROMISE!
Okay, gotta go catch some tuna fishies and send over to Broc:-) 🙂
WELCOME HOME BROC!
Happy Hannah
yeaaaaaaa!!! it’s great that he started eating again.. doesn’t matter what it is.. but he started eating some good stuff for him!!
and of course, taking the pain meds without food on their tummy sometimes makes them feel blech too… so.. yeaaaaa for food!!
I LOVE the chamo bandage!!!!
I hope your pain balancing is good and that Broc is comfy…
keep us posted!!!
